TUSB1146-Q1: USB redriver

Part Number: TUSB1146-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1044A

Tool/software:

I use TUSB1146-Q1 to design displayport alt mode over USB type-C redriving switch solution, but I don't know how far this redriver can transmit without signal attenuation, and it's not specified in the datasheet. Our use scenario requires a 5-meter type-C cable, so I made some requirements for the cable's design, it contains two emarker chips – one on each plug, and two rediver chips are also required - one on each plug.

I would like to ask two questions:

1. The TUSB1146-Q1 Transmission distance? Is it necessary to add additional redrivers in the USB type-C cable?

2. If it need to add redrivers, is there a recommended chip? Since the TUSB1146-Q1 has already switched the signal on the motherboard, can I just use a normal USB redriver in the cable? we need displayport alt mode,  not only transmit USB signals, but also transmit video signals

  • Hi,

    1. The TUSB1146-Q1 Transmission distance? Is it necessary to add additional redrivers in the USB type-C cable?

The maximum passive cable length for 10Gbps signaling is 1m per the USB Type-C spec.

We cannot guarantee any length past the USB spec. You will need active cables here.

    2. If it need to add redrivers, is there a recommended chip? Since the TUSB1146-Q1 has already switched the signal on the motherboard, can I just use a normal USB redriver in the cable? we need displayport alt mode,  not only transmit USB signals, but also transmit video signals

You will need to use an active cable here. This can be bought off the shelf. We do not have much experience with our parts in an active cable end equipment, but the TUSB1044A may be a good device for this application.
