Hi,

We are planning to implement SDI 12G and because of this the FAB house recommend us to use Rogers for dielectric which makes the pricing to increase. Since our solution is low cost, our layout engineer suggested us to proceed with FR4. Could you please provide suggestions on this and let us know if we can proceed with FR4 as dielectric?

Thank you.

Jeevan

Please see this article on how to calculate the trace insertion loss based on the PCB material (Dielectric constant and the dissipation factor). The Roger material will give you better insertion loss than FR4. To choose between FR4 and Roger depends on the trace length and resulted insertion loss, and if that insertion loss fits within your total insertion loss budget.

    Thanks
