TPD1E05U06-Q1: How to identify failure modes after ESD broken

Part Number: TPD1E05U06-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: STRIKE, ESD501

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

Customer using TPD1E05U06-Q1 in Car USB-C CC line. And they met customer return and locate the issue caused by ESD3 TPD1E05U06-Q1 damage in CC1 line.

The resistance between CC1 and GND is 4.6M ohm on good board and 400 ohm on issued board. After remove ESD3, the resistance is normal 2.26M ohm.

The ESD may be damaged by ESD strike or CC1 short to VBAT 12V. How to identify failure modes?

From the picture of issued device, can you comment which mode?

Thank you!
Marc

  • The device failed in short circuit mode because of a voltage applied that was outside of datasheet limitations. If looking for a replacement, ESD501 would work since it is a 12V and low cap part. Our devices fail short typically, which is further proved by how they are measuring a lower impedance with the ESD diode after failure.
