Hi

Does TI offer any Free space optical communication solution for Speeds up to 10G ?

i came across ONET series, but are they only limited to typical SFP module solutions only ?

Kindly suggest any application note to study.

  • Hello Shyam,

We do not offer a full FSO solution. Some of our ONET devices can be used in a discrete solution for FSO acting as the receiver (ONET8551T, ONET8501PB, ONET8531T). And the other ONET devices can be used as the FSO transmitter to drive a laser (ONET1151L, ONET1101L).

We also have a new laser driver: LMH13000, but this device is more suited for OTDR/LiDAR solutions to drive 5A pulse trains up to 250MHz.

However, we do not have an integrated solution that contains a photodiode + TIA/limiting amplifier for the receiver side, and for the transmit side laser driver + laser) Photodiode and laser will be separate and the ONET devices can be used for TIA/limiting amplifier and laser driver.

I am not too familiar in the details of FSO communication, but they commonly use a VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) and a InGaAs quadrant photodiodes. There are also most likely more details such as using a light modulator: such as DLP9500UV which is a digitally controlled micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) spatial light modulator (SLM). When coupled to an appropriate optical system, the DLP9500UV can be used to modulate the amplitude, direction, and/or phase of incoming light (from this paper).

    Thank you,
    Sima
