SN65176B: Power collaps when connecting more than two transceiver

Part Number: SN65176B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3352

Tool/software:

Hello,

I’m designing a controller board using an AM3352 as the CPU and SN6517 as the RS-485 transceiver. The board drives six outputs, but when more than two transceivers are connected the system browns out — the supply current spikes to ~900 mA and the power rail collapses even though it’s rated for 3.5 A. The board works fine if an external power source is added. I’ve attached the schematic — any ideas what might be causing this?

  • Hi Erfan,

Can you verify if there is some sort of short coming from your connector? (Like can J2 short between 1 and 2)

Is the cable you're using a normal 1-1 cable or is it a unique one that crosses over connections?

Are the device's A/B pins being shorted to each other and being set as outputs when you see the brown out condition?
