DP83867E: Schematics review : phy + magnetics + Connector

Part Number: DP83867E

Tool/software:

Hello,

We use DP83867ERGZR in a custom board to transmit Ethernet.

Instead of the RJ45 connector, we have opted for a Samtec shielded Ground Plane Combo Power Socket Strip, a Differential Pair connector (QFSS-016-04.25-X-D-DP-PC4). For the transformer, we have chosen the same part number (HX5008NL) as in the DP83867ERGZ-R-EVM.

  1. Could you confirm that it is feasible to use a non-RJ45 connector, as long as the magnetic components are suitable and the differential pair impedance is properly controlled at 100 ohm ?
  2. Could you please review the following schematics, and ensure the selected magnetics are compatible with the DP83867E device ?

regards,

  • Hello,

    1) It is okay to use non-RJ-45 connector, but be advised that all of our testing and characterization of the product has been with RJ-45 and compatible cabling. However, I have seen designs with M12 connector work fine, so as long as the basic checks are good (such as magnetics and impedance control), this should still function properly.

    2) Ethernet department policy for reviews is for customer/field to evaluate their design against our schematic checklist. This is an easy to use tool which compiles our best learnings over the years. If there are any items not addressed by file, Apps team is more than happy to assist further.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
