DP83867IR: MDIO and MDC pin query

Part Number: DP83867IR

Tool/software:

Dear TI Team,

I am using DP83867IRPAPT in my design and I don't have the MDIO. MDC interface in my MAC.

Is it possible to left unconnected the MDIO, MDC pins and do the configurations in PCB using the strap pins pullup/pulldown resistors?

Below are my configurations required:

Interface: GMII
Speed: 1Gbps
Auto negotiation: Enable

Could you please explain the consequences if I left MDIO, MDC pin unconnected? Also let me know the strap pin resistor configurations for the above requirements.

One more query is that whether i can use GPIO or I2C interface from my SoC to do the MDIO, MDC configurations?

Regards
Shyam

  • Hello Shyam,

DP83867PAP can be strapped into 1G GMII configuration without register access. Simply place PHY in RGMII disable strap and ensure auto-negotiation of 1G is advertised. Why a 10/100M connection is established, PHY will be in MII mode. When a 1G connection is established, PHY will automatically switch into GMII mode.

    Sincerely,
    Gerome

  • Hi Gerome,

Thank you for the quick response.

Is it good to leave MDIO, MDC pins unconnected? If this interface is not connected whether we can able to get the speed (xx Mbps) in our console while performing the test?

Also could you please share the strapping configurations for the below?

    Interface: GMII

    Speed: 1Gbps
    Auto negotiation: Enable

    Regards
    Shyam

  • Hello,

It would be okay to leave the SMI pins unconnected if there is no intention of using them.

For strapping configurations, please refer to the strapping table in the datasheet; specifically regarding RX_DV/CTRL, RX_D6, LED_1, and RX_D4.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
