SN65HVD3082E: Can't pass 4000V surge test

customer use SN65HVD3082 meet surge issue. The product passed L-N/L-PE/N-PE level 3 surge test-1000V voltage, but L-PE failed level 4 surge test, L-N/N-PE can pass level 4 surge test-4000V voltage.

They found IC PIN6 is broken.

Could you please help check customer schematic and PCB layout to see if it has any improvement to help pass Level 4 surge test

    Could you confirm if the common mode choke L1 is populated during their surge test? Can you provide any other information about their test setup?

    Can you confirm exactly what kind of surge test your customer is completing? Is it IEC 61000 4-4 (fast transient) or IEC 61000 4-5 (surge)? SN65HVD3082E is only rated for IEC 61000 4-4, not 4-5 (surge). In general, I would recommend THVD1419 for a device with integrated surge protection. Here is a full list of our surge protected devices.

    Yes , confirmed common mode choke is installed during surge test.

    Customer test standard is China standard---GB/T 17626.5, this standard equal to IEC 61000-4-5. customer product need to pass 4KV surge .

    I noticed that THVD1419 just can support – ± 2.5 kV IEC 61000-4-5 1.2/50-μs Surge, but THVD1439 can support ± 4-kV IEC 61000-4-5 1.2/50-μs surge

    Do you think customer need to use THVD1439 to pass 4KV surge , Or THVD1419 can work with external protection to support 4KV surge ? Thanks.

    SN65HVD3082E is not rated for IEC 61000 4-5 or any surge level transients. External protection must be implemented. I typically recommend TI's ESDS552, but you can also reach out to the Protection Devices team for further comment. You can create a new question on E2E and link it to ESDS552 and ask this question there. 

    Yes, THVD1439 will pass IEC 61000 4-5 1.2/50us at 4kV. However, if this China standard is slightly different, I would still recommend using external surge protection.

    No parameters need to change. THVD1439 is one of our latest RS-485 transceivers intended to replace the SN65HVD series with surge protection in mind.
