ESD351: Part usage

Part Number: ESD351
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD321, ESDS452, TPD2E007, ESD204, ESDS314, ESDS302

Tool/software:

Hello Team,

Plan to have ESD protection for for the FINE interface(Renesas communication channel) pins and VCC pins. The maximum signal levels voltage would be 3.3V+0.3V . Please suggest whether i can use ESD351 device for both the signal and power line pins. Any alternate suggestion for this application . Our requirement is to have protection up to 30kV.

  • ESD351 is a great option. ESD321 is another option with lower capacitance if that is a problem. Both of these have a MAX VRWM of 3.6V so you can use on VCC pin as long as VCC is lower than this. VCC must be lower than the ESD diode VRWM. If it is, ESD351 should work.

  • Thank for your response. We come across another device ESDS452. Can you please confirm which one would be the better options. Also confirm the life cycle/active status of both the parts

  • So ESDS452 has a higher VRWM meaning that it will turn on around 5.5V so voltages below this will not turn diode on. Also, clamping voltage is higher at 8V in contrast ESD351 clamping voltage is 6.5V. Please make sure that the pins ABS MAX RATINGS for voltage are below the clamping voltage, if not downstream will get damaged. On the good side, ESDS452 is bidirectional so if you are expecting interfaces that have both positive and negative voltage swings, you should use a bidirectional diode like ESDS452. It is also a 2 channel so this might help save some board space.

Hopefully this makes sense, if not please follow up with more questions I'm happy to answer them.

  • Hello Team ,

     Thanks for the feedback.

Please confirm the active and EOL status for both ESD351 and ESDS452 diode.

  • Both parts are active, have been released to market and are available for purchase. There are no EOL plans for either diode.

Let me know if you need anything else.

  • Hello Bryan,

ESD351 and ESDs452 can be used for UART lines as well please confirm ?

  • You should not have any problems when using it in UART lines. To give a more accurate response please let me know what the voltage abs max ratings are for the RX and TX pins. Also to confirm, the signal levels voltage is still 3.3V+0.3V right?

  • Yes signal level is 3.3V+0.3V. Absolute max rating for the pins is 5.5V

Please confirm among the following which is best for UART lines   TPD2E007 or  ESD351  or ESDS452 or ESD204(4 channel)

  • We want the clamping voltage to be below or equal to the abs mas rating for the pins. None of these devices you send have a clamping voltage below 5.5V. That being said we do have 2 options that meet the required clamping voltage. ESDS302 is a unidirectional 2 channel with clamping voltage 5.5V. The other option is ESDS314 unidirectional 4 channels with clamping voltage of 5.5V. IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge is 30kV for so these meet your requirement as well. Yes, you can use these for UART lines. Both of these are active and are available for purchase with no plans for EOL. ESDS302 has lower capacitance than ESDS314 but this should not matter for UART lines. If you are using ESD protection for 4 lines I would use ESDS314.

Please follow up if you have more questions.
