SN65LBC173: RMA request for possible plating issue (RE: Mouser Electronics S/O 436790)

Part Number: SN65LBC173

Hello TI CS Team.

Mouser has received a request for RMA from CAES Systems LLC of San Jose, CA USA.  The customer purchased 1500 units of part number SN65LBC173DR from Mouser and is reporting an issue they are seeing with the plating on the products received.  The customer is requesting to return the reel in question from Mouser PO 029-7L438 with Lot Code 3258524WDH and Date code 2346+5M.  We shipped this order on 2025-08-12.  While Mouser is not requesting RMA or FA from TI at this time, I am working to validate the issue the customer presents in order to best facilitate service.  If the parts are determined to need additional review, we will act accordingly at that time.

The customer states:
"These products are non-conforming because the plating stack is incorrect as the plating is only present on the very tips of the leads and not on the whole lead.  Retried XRF multiple times on multiple machines but still no Au/Pd.  Tried with alternate, better machine and no reading of the Au/Pd but a microscopic view of the parts showed plating stack present only on the tips of the leads.

The MRB comments refer to the metal tip that sticks out of the IC here which appear to have a plating issue: as not fully plated."

We were provided images of the parts in question - please see below:

*Is TI aware of any such issues with this device?
*Would the issue noted as specified indicate a plating issue with the parts of concern?
*Is FA required for further review to validate the parts and/or issue, or is this a misunderstanding of the documentation?

Please review and advise ASAP.
Thanks.

  • I'll need to reach out to one of our subject matter experts on this and will get back to you.

  • My contact is actually unsure about this, see response below....

"A guess: our leadframes have NiPdAu finish. They are saying this batch doesn’t have that finish across the fingers completely.

On our side, there is no ATE test that will check that. It is mainly the AT site (MLA) who knows/tracks the leadframe batches to ensure no issues."

I'll need to reach out to the AT site to get some sort of comment on this. This may take a bit of time since I need to locate the correct person.

  • Thanks Bobby.

I will update our internal teams that we are currently working to get this in front of the correct persons at TI who can help better advise.  Please keep me up to date when possible, since this is an active customer request.

  • Hi Ryan,

Can you provide the lot trace code? It would be on the top of the device. (taking a picture of the top of the device would be sufficient) (Note: Different from the lot code)

    -Bobby

  • I don't have an image at this time, or have the trace code, but I will ask the customer if they're able to send us something for referencing and respond as soon as I have something for you.

  • Hi Bobby,

Please see Image below from customer and let me know if anything further is needed.
Also please note that this customer is starting to get elevated that this process is taking a while.
We at Mouser understand the need to get data from the right resources though, so please if able just advise ASAP.

  • Hi Ryan,

Sorry this is taking longer than expected. We normally don't get these kind of questions so finding the correct point of contact isn't very straight forward. I think based on the top marking I may have the wrong point of contact since the site code state 'M' but I will follow up with the person I contacted to verify.

    -Bobby

  • My contact confirmed he is not responsible for 'M' markings which stand for Mexico assembly site. I'm currently working on trying to find the org chart for that site instead. I'll give you an update when I'm able to find the correct contact for this site.

    -Bobby

  • Ryan,

I'm having a difficult time finding the contact to get this information. I looped in my manager as well to see if he would know but so far we haven't been able to get anywhere.

You may be able to submit a quality return through TI and see if they can get the correct person to advise.
