TXB0304: eSPI/ SPI application and related information

Part Number: TXB0304
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMUX1574, TXU0304, TXB0604

Hi TI Team,

I have some questions regarding the TXB0304 / TXB0304N.
Could this device be used as a repeater for SPI or eSPI applications?

According to the datasheet, the maximum data rate is specified as 140 Mbps.
Does this mean 140 Mbps per channel, or is this the total combined data rate across all channels?

Additionally, could you provide more details on how this data rate was verified?
Do you have any specific test setups or reference schematics you could share?

Lastly, would this device be able to support signals with a bandwidth greater than 70 MHz?

Thank you very much for your support.

Best regards,
Jason

  • Additionally, do you have any recommended devices for use as an eSPI/SPI repeater?

I noticed that the TMUX1574 is being used as a switch for eSPI/SPI applications, and it features a 2 GHz bandwidth specification. Could you explain why such a high bandwidth is required for this type of application?

In our case, would it be acceptable to use a switch with a lower bandwidth, for example around 500 MHz, for eSPI/SPI signals?

Thank you again for your guidance.

  • SPI signals are unidirectional, and can be buffered with the TXU0304.

eSPI data signals in quad I/O mode are bidirectional and cannot be buffered. The TXB0304 can be used, but only for level shifting. You must put eSPI devices near each other so that redriving is not necessary.

The TMUX1574 does not buffer or level-shift the signals; its only function is to disconnect the inactive channel.

  • Hi Jason,

If your signals (eSPI) are auto bidirectional, there is the recently released TXB0604 that can be evaluated as well supporting higher DR and capacitive loads: www.ti.com/.../TXB0604
