DP83TD510E-EVM: Problems adding 'dumb power' to SPE eval modules, problems upgrading to transformer coupling also

Part Number: DP83TD510E-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-010261, DP83TD510E-PODL-EVM

I have evaluated SPE for traffic detector use, using 2 x DP83TD510E-EVM and I have successful (reliable) comunications across suitable cables, with reasonable EMC performance. However I need to add power on the data lines, albeit only in a 'dumb' way (no SCCP, not true PoDL). I have experimented by adding to the EVM modules. components which are compatible with TI and WE app notes (like common mode choke TDK RCM70CGI-471) but as soon as any power is drawn down the cable, the communications becomes very unreliable. I have also tried changing to transformer coupling, which we would need for a product, again in accordance with app notes - using Wurth 7448841470. But after significant effort I still cannot get reliable communication with the transformer included.

Are you able to offer any design support over these issues?

However despite any remote design support that may be available, I conclude I can only progress if I can buy an evaluation board which has injected power and transformer coupling built in from the start. Products like TIDA-010261 or the Wurth EVM board recently demonstrated in a 'Digital day' video, do not seem to be availabel to buy yet. Do I need to move over to Analogue Devices evaluation boards to be able to buy modules which already use transfromer coupling and provide power over dataline functionality, as opposed to app note support? Or do you offer anything equivalent to EVAL-ADIN1100EBZ with  EPCOS / TDK  10BASE-T1L daughterboards?

  • Hi Mark,

We do have a 510 EVM built for PoDL Application which you can put a request for on the 510 Device Page. After putting in a request, someone from out marketing department will reach out to you to discuss further.

I suspect that the CDN network may be the cause of the behavior you are observing. The power being supplied might not be completely separated from the data signals, which would cause signal integrity issues causing errors in communication.

  • Hi Vivaan,

Many thanks - the DP83TD510E-PODL-EVM does look to be what I need, provided it is built with the transformer coupling fitted. I have entered a request and look forward to hearing more about possible hardware availability. (After my comprehensive but failed experiments using components which should work, I do need to be able to buy a known working evaluation module with the power injection and transformer coupling built in).

    Best regards,

    Mark

  • Mark,

I have let our marketing team know and they should reach out to you shortly. If you have any other questions during testing feel free to reply here or create a new E2E thread. For now, I will be closing it.

    Best,

    Vivaan
