TUSB7340 to HDMI

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB7340

I'm using a USB 3.0 to HDMI Viewplex display adapter based on the SMSC UFX7000 device.  I've tried it on two systems running Windows 7 (64 bit) and it appears to be working fine.  However on the machine using a Texas Instruments XHCI Controller (Chipset ID TUSB7340) on a StarTech PCIe USB 3.0 Card (PEXUSB3S4) the USB Audio Device does not load, so audio doesn't pass through the HDMI channel. On this same machine the USB Audio driver loads fine if the USB 2.0 is used.  Can a fix be provided for this?

Thanks very much.

  • Hello Gene,

You will have to go with your Card vendor. The TUSB7340 has some customization options, we can't know how Startech is configuring the host controller.

    Regards.

  • Gene,

When you say "I've tried it on two systems running Windows 7 (64 bit) and it appears to be working fine.", is this with a USB 3.0 connection or USB 2.0 connection?  I assume that the SMSC device requires driver installation, did that appear to go correctly behind the TUSB7340?

  • Hi Dan,

The USB Audio driver loads properly and the device functions correctly when the SMSC device is plugged into the USB 2.0 port on either computer.  The driver installation appeared the go correctly on both sytems, with the exception that the documentation shows that the USB Audio device should load when the device is plugged in, which it doesn't do on the system using the TI USB 3.0 controller mounted on the PCIe card..  My laptop uses a Renesas USB Host controller and it works fine on that system.

  • Hi Dan,

FYI I did try updating the driver for the TUSB7340 with the driver located here (http://www.ti.com/tool/tusb7340evm#supportandcommunity).  With this driver the SMSC was not recognized at all even if I subsequently reinstalled its driver.  I do have an inquiry into SMSC; so far they haven't responded.  I also have an inquiry in to Startech, but they have not yet offered a meaningful suggestion.

    Thanks very much,

    Gene

  • Gene,

This sounds like a driver issue from SMSC.  I am asking our team to try and test and see if they can replicate.

  • Hi Elias,

Either of you could be right.  Support at Startech at this point has concluded that it must be a defect with that particular card and they have a replacement in the mail.  But it still could be a driver issue with either device.  For some reason SMSC still hasn't responded.

    Thanks for the continuing effort,

    Gene

  • I've received and installed the replacement card from Startech.  The behavior is exactly the same.

  • Gene,

We have been exchanging information (and hardware) with SMSC.  Hopefully between the two of us we will be able to identify the solution in the next week.

One question I had, I am still not clear if you have been able to get it to work with any USB 3.0 host controller - not just the TI that you have not been able to make work?

  • The device works fine on my laptop with the built-in Renesas USB 3.0 Host controller.

Please keep me in the loop, and thanks very much for jumping on this.

    Gene

  • Hi Dan,

Have you been able to replicate the problem in your lab?

    Gene

  • Gene,

Sorry, but no we have not had a chance yet to test the SMSC device in our lab.  I have asked the team to work on this next week.

  • Gene,

We were able to acquire one of these devices from the manufacturer and test it.

We were able to repro the 'no audio over HDMI' issue you reported on every USB host we tried. We tried several competitor xHCI and USB2 host controllers and in every case there was no audio present on HDMI. I see no problems being reported by our hardware or in my review of the protocol analyzer dump taken during device operation.

In this case, our device appears to be working as expected. We did provide our device directly to SMSC to ensure compatibility with their future SW and HW releases.

  • Is it your opinion that the problem is correctable with a driver update for the SMSC device?  Also can you provide the contact you are working with at SMSC?

Thanks very much for your help.

  • Gene,

I think it likely that this issue could be resolved by the device manufacturer via firmware or software update.

SMSC can be contacted here: custserv@smsc.com

  • The SMSC device does work with some USB hosts and all parties concerned would be better off if we could correct the driver issues and get all the hardware working together.  That would be my, and I hope your, preference.

It seems to me that the problem is correctable with a driver update to either the SMSC device or the PCIe card, but it's up to you pros to determine who should do it.  If I can't get a reassurance that the driver issue is being addressed by someone then I'll have to return one of the devices.  Can you tell me who makes an HDMI adapter that is compatible with the TI device?

    Regards,

    Gene
