TPD4E1B06: TPD4E1B06 or TPD4E1U06 for Ethernet ESD protection

Part Number: TPD4E1B06
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD4E1U06, ESDS304

Hi,

In the System Design Guidelines for the TM4C129x Tiva™ C Series Microcontrollers (spma056) I read that TPD4E1B06 should be used for ESD protection between device and magnetics:

But in the "Integrated Protection Devices.pptx" I read that TPD4E1U06 is the part to go (although not specific for the TM4C129x device.

Also interesting in this context:

Maybe the ESDS304 is the right solution as this part is probably designed for 3.3V systems (?)

I'm a bit confused.

What would be the correct solution for ESD protection between TM4C129x and the magnetics? Unipolar or bipolar ESD protection diodes?

Thanks and best regards,
Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

There are a few options for protecting Ethernet systems, but we usually recommend a device that has some surge protection as well in case the magnetics can't take care of all the surge. ESDS314 will be the device that supports the highest amount of surge current at 25A then there is ESDS304 at 12A, then the TPD4E1U06 at 3A.

When the operating signal swings both positive and negative is when bipolar is needed but should not be needed for Ethernet.

    Best,
