TCAN2847-Q1: The Power supply for VCAN

Hi team,

 

I’m using the TCAN2847-Q1 as the SBC for an automotive communication application. At the moment, I only plan to use classic CAN, not CAN FD. Is it acceptable to leave the VCAN power pin unconnected if the CAN FD channel won’t be used? I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer in the documentation or on the EVM.

    It doesn't matter if you aren't using CAN-FD - if you are using this SBC for any CAN communication (classic or FD) you need to have a 5V supply connected to VCAN for proper operation. Without a proper VCAN voltage - you will not be able to send any CAN messages. 

    Typically most applications are going to have VCC2 connected to VCAN - which will use up to about 1/2 of the total current output capability of VCC2 (VCAN you should expect around 100mA worst case (technically during fault conditions it could go to 110mA - but that is not standard operation) and VCC2 can provide up to 200mA at 5V). 

    Basically if you  never have VCAN voltage you can't turn on the CAN transceiver (it can still be wake capable as that uses the low power receiver that is powered directly from VSUP but you won't actually be able to turn it on without proper VCAN voltage)- the other functions of the SBC still work without VCAN voltage - but for any CAN usage you need VCAN to be connected to a 5V source.
