TCAN1044-Q1: Multiplexing a Single CAN-FD Interface (TCAN1044-Q1) to 16 External CAN Buses using TMUX1309-Q1

Part Number: TCAN1044-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMUX1309-Q1

  • Hi Shou-Zhi,

    Please note that this is not a standard CAN topology per 9.2.2.1 of the data sheet as it seems to be a star topology with 1 transceiver feeding into 16 branches (not a 2-terminator bus). Each branch should act like a stub with extra R-on and capacitance from the TMUX and may include reflections / ringing, especially as speed increases.

    It can work if stubs are kept short similar to the data sheet's 9.2.2.1 I.e., keep all traces as short and symmetric as possible, routed as a differential pair.

    Also note that TMUX is not rated for surges and would recommend to ensure proper protection (TVS, series R, CMC, etc) while ensuring only one line is connected at a time.

    May also consider muxing TXD / RXD instead of CANH / CANL or an automotive analog switch / relay if you must switch the physical bus, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.
