TCA9539: Questions about absolute maximum ratings

Hi Team,

Please explain the following:
The datasheet states that the absolute maximum ratings for VI and VO of the TCA9539 are -0.5V to 6V.
Does the above condition mean that the device will not break even if a voltage in the range of -0.5V to 6V is input when no power is applied?

    Hi User6236094,

    Correct, however these are the abs. max ratings of the device. Operating outside the recommended operating conditions but within the absolute maximum conditions may shorten the life of the part over time. 

    Exceeding abs. max ratings may induce damage to the device. 

    If you needed to apply a 6V signal to the input of this device while unpowered, this is okay, but not recommended use of the part.
