TCAN1145-Q1: Termination Resistor power rating selection

Part Number: TCAN1145-Q1

Hello Team,

We are exploring TCAN1145DMTRQ1 chip in our project.

I have following questions while using this chip.

  1. How do i sized the power rating of termination resistors used across CANH and CANL lines considering 16V battery short to CANH (& CANL) for 1min duration.?
  2. Will this device supports for load dump pulse voltage upto 40V at VSUP (pin: 10). for atleast 10 no of pulses in its lifetime.?

Following questions are for TCAN1044ADRBRQ1 chip

  1. Do we need to add CMC choke at CANH and CANL lines? what value is recommended?
  2. Do we need to connect supply volatge (3.3V or 5V) at NC/VIO pin?
  • Hi Prashant,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

We actually have a great reference from Scott on this. I would recommend looking into this first for some background on CAN and termination resistor ratings:

Wattage Requirements for CAN-Bus Terminating Resistor with SN65HVD233

Another general resource for you is our CAN FAQ page for future reference:

     [FAQ] CAN Transceiver Resources

TCAN1145: Yes, this device supports 40V load dumps. This pin is rated for 42V. Just ensure that the voltage is not higher than that.

    As for the TCAN1044A:

    1.  CMC is only needed if you have strict EMC requirements. Otherwise, an CMC is not required. A 51-100uH range is recommended.

    2. For the TCAN1044ADRBRQ1, it has the NC pin (since it is not TCAN1044AV). NC can be left floating.

Let us know if you have any further questions!
