TDES954: Cross-compatibility between V3Link and FPD-Link III SER/DES devices

Part Number: TDES954
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TSER953, DS90UB954-Q1,

Hi, I recently ran a test using a TSER953 serializer connected to a DS90UB954-Q1 deserializer, and the communication appears to work correctly without any evident issues.

This raised a few questions for me:

  • Are the V3Link and FPD-Link III protocols fully compatible or interchangeable at the physical/link level?

  • Is it supported (or at least considered safe) to use a mixed combination such as TSER953 + DS90UB954-Q1, or vice versa?

  • What potential limitations should be considered when mixing automotive-grade SER/DES devices (DS90UB953/954-Q1) with industrial devices (TSER953 / TDES954)?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Francesco,

The V3Link and FPD-Link devices are compatible at the protocol level, so they are able to link to each other. But we do not recommend mixing V3Link and FPD-Link. Reason is that V3Link is not automotive qualified and it is only rated -20C to +85C ambient temperature. The FPD-Link product line is AEC-Q100 automotive qualified and rated -40C to +105C temperature range. The automotive parts also typically have stricter Insertion Loss and Return Loss limits on the high-speed channel, since we mainly rate our parts based on the worst-case operating conditions defined in the datasheet.

    Best,
