TUSB320LAI: UFP mode - 5V 3A current set up

Part Number: TUSB320LAI

Good morning,
I need to connect a USB-C port to my system. My board needs to be programmed before being installed in the target cabinet, and I wanted to do this via the USB-C port.

My problem is that I need to power the microcontroller and the surrounding analog circuitry with the USB-C port. The combined current draw for 5V is about 2.5 amps. I'd like to use the TUSB320LAI in UFP mode. Additionally, for communication with the microcontroller, I'll use an FT232RN for USB-to-UART.

I wanted to know if I can get this much power from the power source (PC) I'll connect with the TUSB320LAI?
Is it also possible to request 5V 3A power without using the I2C/GPIO on the chip?

Thanks

Luca

  • Hi Luca,

For the TUSB320LAI in UFP mode, the OUT1/OUT2 pins are needed to communicate what the advertised current from the DFP is. These pins should route back to the device or whichever component determines how much current is drawn and indicate what current is available, that way the device knows how much it can draw and do as so. If the OUT1/OUT2 pins are not used to determine what the available current is, the device may try to pull more current than is available, or not enough current.

    Thanks,

    Ryan
