SN75176B: different behavior by different batches

We have been using the "SN75176BDR" component from Texas Instruments for several years.

We have now noticed that components from different batches behave quite differently in some aspects – for example, in terms of power consumption.

The "old" batch with the code "1CM" has the power consumption specified in the datasheet, while the "new" batch with the code "29K" has a much lower power consumption (2mA), but it looks like these components are working.

We haven't found anything in the datasheet indicating that anything has changed.

We also haven't found a PCN, errata sheet, or anything similar on the Texas Instruments website.

Could you tell me what has changed in the component between these two batches?

The new die uses a CMOS architecture. The guaranteed datasheet limits have not changed, but the typical values are now more similar to a modern transceiver like the THVD1520 (which also is cheaper).

Hi Sara,

Clemens is correct, the new devices are a new die with a different design that uses lower current. The new design should be functionally the same.

Since when will the new die be installed in the SN75176BDR? Is there a PCN or any other document available?

Hi Sara,

That PCN (which Clemens linked) is the correct one. It was released on Aug 2021. Devices released after that time will have the new die (give or take a several months due to production lead times). So the device marked "1C" is the pre-PCN material. 1 indicates 2021 and C indicates December. The device marked 29 was created in Sept 2022, which is the new die with improved current consumption.
