THVD8000: power line communication by using THVD8000

Part Number: THVD8000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THS6222

Hi Team,

Customer is checking whether we can have device can support VBUS on 80VDC for power line communication. I see THVD8000 have similar function and read the following application. Could you please let me know whether THVD8000 is the best device we can use for the power line communication? Thanks.

  • Hi Frank,

It will depend on the data rate - generally THVD8000 is good up to 500kbps and potentially 1Mbps - but it will depend on bus length.

However - you will not be able to use a standard THVD8000 application as shown in the datasheet because the voltage exceeds what we generally consider the max voltage for DC power. For standard THVD8000 applications the max DC power is ~50V and typically will be capped around a few amps at most - above 50V and/or higher current applications you generally will need to look at our high voltage implemenation.

Essentially it uses the THVD8000 as the data modulator and then uses a differential line driver (THS6222) to drive the data through a transformer and low pass filter onto the main power bus.

We have an app note that explores this concept:

    https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slla590/slla590.pdf?ts=1693491025500&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Fproduct%252FTHVD8000

Please note it says "AC Outlet" - but this application was actually designed with 2 main applications in mind - one of them is for an AC mains (I.e. AC outlet) but the other is for solar panel inverters - which seems to be pretty close to what they are looking at designing.

That app note that I linked above was the inspiration for a reference design that is specific to solar panel applications that you can find here:

    https://www.ti.com/tool/PLC010935BP

So please pass this information along to your customer so they can see our suggested implemenation - max data rate will vary with bus length but for shorter busses you can get up to 1Mbps - but you can maximize distance with data rates <= 12.5kbps (which is a 125KHz modulation frequency on the THVD8000).

If you have any additional questions please be sure to let me know and I will see what I can do!

    Best,

    Parker Dodson
