TCA6416A: Design Query

These are the absolute maximum values. Anything above these values subjects the device to potential permanent damage. I recommend giving some buffer room. You could give a 10% buffer on VCCP and VCCI for the max current consumption.

Hi Abhishek,

Do not connect an output to GND. In the case that you drive the output HIGH accidently, you will create a power-to-gnd short. 

An unused output should be left floating.

Do you mean can the IO expander output open-drain signals instead of push-pull? This cannot be done purely on the output port register because it uses a push-pull output structure. If you are referring to the IO expander receiving an open-drain output, this will work. An external pull-up to the IO pins configured as input is needed. 

If you need an open-drain output IO expander, consider using the TCAL6416 or TCAL9539 as these both have the option to configure the output IO's to port-wise open-drain.
