TCAN1044A-Q1: Communication failure issue

Part Number: TCAN1044A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ESD2CAN24-Q1

Hi team,

My customer uses TCAN1044A-Q1 in Robot dog for communication and met communication failure issue.

Could you please help review the schematic as below

image.png

Customer finds that the impedance between good device and issued device is different.

Do you have any insight for it?

  • Hi Gary,

The schematic looks good overall and nothing stands out that could impact their impedances. If significantly different, I would suspect the abs max rating was most likely exceeded, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.

  • Hi Ikwuyum,

I compare the impedance between good IC and issued IC. Issued IC has different impedance between CANH/CANL to GND. I guess CANH and CANL pins should be damaged by CAN BUS.

Q1: Does customer need to add ESD on CAN BUS? Do you have recommended part number?

Q2: If customer change IC from TCAN1044AV-Q1(BUS fault voltage ±58V) to TCAN42HV-Q1(p2p, ±70V) and doesn't use ESD protection, will it be helpful to solve this issue? Customer doesn't want to change PCB design.

  • Hi Gary,

It depends on what caused the issue and would recommend to double confirm.

If damaged and caused by exceeding the abs max, then yes a higher rated abs max device should help.

If caused by exceeding the specified ESD ratings, then TVS diode should help. You may see ESD2CAN24-Q1 and would further recommend checking with the PD team for their latest diode recommendation, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.
