DP83822I: Configuration of Pulse Transformer (Magnetics)

Part Number: DP83822I

Hi team,

Regarding the magnetics, the configuration shown in the “TPI Network” example in the datasheet appears to be different from the configuration shown around the magnetics in the schematic of the EVM User’s Guide. Which configuration should be considered correct or recommended for a new design?

Also, when connecting two of these devices, is it possible to design the interface without using the pulse transformer (magnetics) and have the devices operate correctly, or is such a transformer-less (direct) connection not allowed / not recommended?

Best Regards,

Shota

  • Hi Shota-san,

Please follow TPI network circuit configuration on the datasheet. In addition, the EVM implements TPI network circuit as shown in the datasheet. The termination part of the schematic has the pullups to AVD.

Also, when connecting two of these devices, is it possible to design the interface without using the pulse transformer (magnetics) and have the devices operate correctly, or is such a transformer-less (direct) connection not allowed / not recommended?

You can connect two PHYs without transformer by using 33nF decoupling capacitors.
You can find additional information here: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla088a/snla088a.pdf?ts=1772991989506
This PHY, like DP83848, was validated with transformerless configuration.

    Best,
