TCAN1043A-Q1: TCAN1043A-Q1 support 24V systems?

Part Number: TCAN1043A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1043-Q1,

hello,

Does the TCAN1043A-Q1 support 24V systems? I see the TCAN1043-Q1 datasheet explicitly states support for 24V, but the TCAN1043A-Q1 datasheet does not mention this.

  • Hi Dehua,

Yes, they both support. You may also tell by their abs max ratings being up to 58 V, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.

  • Hi Michael,

This is our circuit diagram. The CAN bus is externally connected to a PCAN device and is functioning normally. Then, CANH is shorted to 32V, and the short is removed after 60 seconds. However, CAN communication is lost, and the impedance of CANH to ground drops to 65kΩ (normally 2MΩ). What could be the possible reasons?

  • Hi Dehua,

    • Was communication lost immediately? Or after some time? If overtime, the TVS may have became partially conductive pulling CANH to GND for the lower impedance. Remove theTVS and re-measure to confirm.
    • Same or different observation when the termination resistors were populated?
    • What voltage was measured on the IC pin when 32 V was applied? If greater than the abs max due to inductance on the bus; most likely partial damage. Especially if the communication do not resume once the fault is removed, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.

  • Hi Michael,

    • The communication is lost immediately, we have removed the TVS before conducting the short-circuit test.
    • We do not use terminal resistors during our tests, so the results with terminal resistors are unknown. Will they have an impact?
    • The length of the CAN line is 1 m. The pin voltage during the test has not been measured yet and will be tested later. In addition, we performed this test using the 1044 and obtained the same result.
    • Is the 58V in the datasheet a DC value or a pulse value?
  • Hi Michael,

Referring to this article, we removed the CMC and the test passed.

  • Hi Dehua,

Thanks for confirming most likely transients > than the abs max ratings observed on the IC pins due to the inductance and would further suggest utilizing the recommendations included in the apps note, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.

  • Hi Michael,

    Thanks for your help.
