DP83TC816-Q1: Ambiguous GND reference for interface on DP83TC816

Part Number: DP83TC816-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS9324, DP83TC815EVM-MC

Hi,

I am currently designing a data aquisition system using a DP83TC816 for the data interface and timing for an ADS9324. I want to isolate the entire system from ground to prevent ground loops and minimise noise but the datasheet for the DP83TC816 in section "9.2 Typical Applications" shows that the MDI coupling cap and ESD shunt resisitor should be connected to ground.

Is it intended to connect the MDI coupling cap and ESD shunt resisitor to the ground on the DP83TC816 or the global non isolated ground?

Thanks,

Alex Betts

  • Hi Alex,

You can see DP83TC815EVM-MC for an implementation of separate device GND and "global" ground. In this case, the global ground is connected to shielded MDI cable.

In schematic above (from DP83TC815EVM-MC), GND is device/board GND and GND_CONN is shield ground. For isolation between GND and GND_CONN, use 1nF capacitor for C98,C88 and 1M resistor for R40 and R41.

    Best,

    Charles
