Can SN75LVDS83B support HD 1080P

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75LVDS83B, DS90C387A, DS90C187

Hi Guys,

Question as mentioned in subject, can SN75LVDS83B support HD 1080P? Datasheet only states "Suited for Display Resolution Ranging from HVGA up to HD with low EMI"
Not sure does it support 1080P (1920x1080).

I'm assuming HD means 1280 x 720 and are in the scope of the "HD Ready" label. But to get 1080P means Full HD of 1920x1080

If that is the case, can any kind soul point me to the right part to use? Thanks alot...

  • Greetings -

The question needs some application details to be completly anserwed.  The PCLK rate for the application is a function of the resolution (1920 x 1080), the frame rate (typically in the 30 to 60 fps range) and the video blanking range that can be from a few percent to to up about 30%.

If we assume 60 fps - a very common refresh rate.

If we assume 8% blanking (1.08) - usually this is an application setting and also depend upon what the graphic source and display supports.

    Calculating the required PCLK yields 1920 x 1080 x 60 x 1.08 = 134.4MHz.

The SN75LVDS83B supports PCLKs from 10  to 135 MHz, so with these assumptions the device supports this reolution on a single pixel LVDS interface for 8bpp color.

Note Blanking is resticted to 8% or less, or the frame rate would need to be reduces.  Also check that the display selected can support a single pixel LVDS interface at 135MHz.

  • If we want to use 24bpp interface. What's the maximum resolution we can get?

  • Steve,

John's calculations are based on 8bpp/color or 24bpp, so yes the SN75LVDS83B supports full 1920x1080 at 60 fps.

  • Hi Lee, I'll break it down.

-The SN75LVDS83B only cares about the clock frequency, and supports 10-135MHz.  The graphics source determines the resolution, refresh rate, and blanking, and that equates to a certain clock frequency.

-"HD" does refer to 720p.  VESA's timing standard for 720p is 74.25MHz, which is indeed between 10-135MHz.  VESA's standard for 1080p is 148.5MHz, and that is commonly followed.

-Most customers use the SN75LVDS83B to drive an LCD panel.  Virtually all 1080p panels that receive LVDS use 2-channel LVDS, with 6 or 8 data lanes.  The SN75LVDS83B can't support this.  For this, use a 2-channel LVDS transmitter, such as the DS90C387A or the new DS90C187.

    Best regards,
    Ross

  • Thanks, all. It really helps us to select the LCD panel.

  • Hi Ross,

    Thank you for the explanation.

    Our HD panel is 1920x1200 supporting 1 CH LVDS. So calculating the required PCLK yields 1920 x 1200 x 60 x 1.08 = 149.299MHz
Besides DS90C387A / DS90C187 which are dual channel, is there any improved bandwidth version of LVDS83B? Since this is the existing chip, it would be easier for us.
Did looked at LVDS83C but resolution was reduced for low power purpose. Not what I'm looking for. Thanks

  • Hi Lee, the required PCLK is specified by the panel datasheet.  The "1.08" factor is only an estimate.  What is the panel model number?  Can you please send me the datasheet?  My email address is reisenbeis <at> ti <dotcom>.

    Thanks,
