Hi Team,

We want to use one GPIO expander in one of our design. Our supply voltage for this particular device is 1.8V/3.3V and we need all the GPIOs as 1.8V compactible outputs. Mostly, we will configure all the GPIOs as outputs.

We are planning to use TCAL9538 or TCA6408A. Kindly suggest which one will be the best fit for our application.

Only the TCA6408A has different supplies for the I²C signals and the I/O pins.

Hi Clemens,

Yes. I understood that TCA6408A is having two different supplies for I2C Signals and I/O Points. I think that both VCCI and VCCP are capable for 1.8V operation. Correct me if iam wrong. Additionally, let us know the default state of these GPIOs.

Hello Manyam,

Both TCA6408A, TCA6416A, TCAL6408, and TCAL6416A have dual-supplies (VCCI & VCCP) and can support 1.8V.

Each datasheet will have a Control Register and Command Byte section. That's where you can find the default state at power-up. Thanks!

Hi Josh,

Thanks for your response. Please clarify the below points.

1. Currently, we have ADS7138-Q1 in our design. What will be the default state of this device.

2. Our requirement is purely, GPIO expander, then among ADS7138-Q1 and TCAL devices which will be the best fit device.

3. By any chance, can we read the GPIO data which is driving by other device.

Hello Manyam,

Apologies for the delay. Yes, the TCAL device can be used as a pure GPIO expander.

Using the TCAL9538 as an example, the Input Port register (0x00) will tell you the logic level of each I/O.
