TUSB1310 schematic difference for host and device

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1310, TUSB1310A

Hi,

I wanted to know whats the difference in schematic for plugging TUSB1310 PHY, in a design as a host or as a device, with reference to VBUS i-e, the power provided to the cable in case of host or expected from the cable in case of device. Do we need to connect a separate power supply along TUSB1310 in case of host, or the TUSB1310 will provide the necessary power to the device?.

Regards

Aqeel

  • Hello Aqeel,

The TUSB1310A can supply VBUS to a device in accordance with the USB specification, whether it has the necessary power depends on the downstream device current requirements, for high-power peripherals it is recommended to add some power-switching circuitry.

You can see Section 3.7 of the implementation guide at the below link.

  • Thanks for the response. Well in case you mentioned above,  how the TUSB1310A would distinguish between if it is to supply power to standard USB cable in case of host, or drain power from the USB cable in case of device. Because there is signal "POWER_PRESENT" output from TUSB1310A (with reference to PIPE3 specifications), which tells the upstream device that it is receiving power from the other end via VBUS. In case of upstream port it is understandable that the TUSB1310A will take power from the VBUS and will indicate POWER_PRESENT to Link Layer via PIPE3 interface, but in case of downstream port the TUSB1310A has to provide power via VBUS, i am curious from where TUSB1310A will input power in case of downstream port, so that it can output power via VBUS.

  • The TUSB1310A is never a power source.  The system would need to be the power source.

  • Thanks ! that pretty much clarifies.
