TUSB1146-Q1: TUSB1146-Q1 + TPS65987D without FW flashing

Part Number: TUSB1146-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D, TUSB1146

Hello!

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what the "standard" firmware loaded into TUSB1146-Q1 and TPS65987D is and if it can support our application or not.

Our use case is very straightfoward, we want to use USB-C Alt-Mode connecting a Jetson Orin to an external display without complex PD negotiation (our application requires 5V 1A at most, usually around 1W total power usage).

We ordered the TUSB1146-Q1 EVM kit and we tested to see if it works without flashing anything and it did work with our intented display and with another model as well.

So the question: Can we use the TUSB1146 + TPS65987D without without flashing anything on either of them and just connect the schematics as is in the TUSB EVM kit? I can't find any details on what the "standard" configuration of these devices is or what FW is pre-loaded into the TUSB EVM kit

Furthermore: If FW flashing is mandatory, for our application is the TPS external memory mandatory or is it a optional?

Thank you very much for your time,

Mihnea

  • Hi,

The TUSB1146-Q1 can function without any firmware. However, the PD controller requires firmware.

I can share the TUSB1146-Q1 EVM schematic, layout, and .bin files for the PD controller over PM. Please accept my friend request on E2E.
