TMUXHS4612: design selection

Part Number: TMUXHS4612

Hi Team,

We have one requirement where we have one input HDMI 2.1 connector and one Output HDMI 2.1 connector.

my input HDMI 2.1 connection is fixed , but I want to enable and disble my output HDMI 2.1 connector.

for this purpose i am using this TI MUX TMUXHS4612 in our design.

1- kindly let us know if it will support?

2- what design guidlines I need to take care while routing , my board is not big, i kept 8-10 mm gap between the two connector to make shortest routing.

3- Also want to usderstand if i want to use this same concept and same MUX IC TMUXHS4612 for USB4.0 , will it support or not?

  • Hi Sriram,

    Notes on the schematic:

    1. VCC is within recommended range, cap is present.
    2. Depending on if the AUX is on the sink or source side you will need either a Pull up of 2K or 47Kohm to the HDMI supply.
    3. We recommend to tie unused pins to GND using a 50ohm resistor
    4.GNDs are properly grounded

This device does support USB 4.0.

The external components need to be placed as close as possible to the device to minimize signal loss. Long having short traces is better.

    Thank you,
    Arya

  • Hi Team,

Thank you for your quick response !

we have few more questions regarding the same design.

we are using the same logic one connect is my input and another connector is my output , in between we are using TI MUX TMUXHS4612 to control my output connector for enabling and disabling it.

we are using the above logic for all the three interfaces HDMI 2.1 , DP 2.1 and USB 4.0.

1- Do you recommend any stack up, routing, placement guidelines keeping the speed  of USB 4.0.

2- As per data sheet we are using the level shifter  in this circuit, do you recommend it in our present design?

3- Also want to understand if we need to use it which all interfaces it is recommended , i.e is it recommended in all the 3 interfaces or Only HDMI and DP ?

sharing the schematic of HDMI interface, we have updated the schematic's  as per previous inputs.

    ...

  • Hi Sriram,

    1. Here is a image of a example layout for this device:

For high speed applications it is important to avoid sharp angle in the traces

    2. The level shifter is needed only if you think that the HDMI source or sink is not able to handle 5V so if it can handle 5V then you would not need the level shifter.

    3. Yes this device supports all three, such as Display port, HDMI and USB 4.0.

    Thank you,
    Arya

  • Thankyou for the response,

Just one more last question  will this TI MUX TMUXHS4612 support USB4 Version 2.0, Gen3. 40 Gbps.

  • Hi Sriram,

The TMUXHS4612 does USB4 up to 20Gbps, so if it is 40Gbps is above the devices limitation.

    Thank you,
    Arya

  • Hi Arya,

1- I just want to understand, what ever is  mentioned as 20Gbps in datasheet , is it 20Gbps for per lane or it is full bandwidth support?

2- Can you suggest any part which can support for USB4 Version 2.0, Gen3. 40 Gbps as full bandwidth

    Regards

    Sriram

  • Hi Sriram,

Yes it will be 20Gbps per lane. The bandwidth is 13Ghz.

In terms of 40Gbps, unfortunately we currently do not have a device that is able to achieve that speed.

    Thank you,
    Arya
