Part Number: DP83867ERGZ-S-EVM
Dear TI Support Team,
I am working with a DP83867ERGZ-S-EVM evaluation board and need assistance enabling test pattern transmission for gigabit Ethernet signal integrity measurements.
My Setup:
- EVM: DP83867ERGZ-S-EVM (powered via external 5V supply)
- Connection: USB-C (laptop) to USB-A (EVM J19) cable. Note: My laptop only has USB-C ports, so I'm using a USB-C to USB-A cable to connect to the EVM's USB Type-A receptacle at J19.
- Software: TI DIEP GUI (downloaded from TI website) + USB 2 MDIO tool
- Link Status: 1000BASE-T link successfully established via Ethernet
- Test Equipment: Tektronix MSO54 oscilloscope (1 GHz analog bandwidth) with TDP1500 differential probe
Issue: The DIEP GUI software does not recognize or enumerate the EVM when connected via USB. Windows Device Manager does not show a new COM port or TI device when the USB cable is plugged into J19. The board is powered and the Ethernet link is functional, but I cannot access MDIO registers to configure test modes.
Troubleshooting Already Performed:
- USB cable verified working for both data and power (successfully transfers files and charges other devices, including smartphone file-sharing confirmation)
- Tested multiple USB-C ports on laptop
- Checked Windows Device Manager while plugging/unplugging USB cable from J19 - no new devices appear or disappear
- External 5V power supply confirmed working (LD7 LED illuminated)
- Gigabit Ethernet link confirmed established (1000M LINK LED on)
Goal: I need to force the DP83867 PHY into a continuous test pattern transmission mode (Test Mode 1, PRBS, or similar) to capture clean eye diagrams at the magnetics using my oscilloscope. Live traffic eye diagrams are too variable for proper signal integrity characterization.
Questions:
- Does the DP83867ERGZ-S-EVM's USB connection (J19) support MDIO register access, or is it power-only?
- Do I need additional hardware (JTAG adapter, USB-to-MDIO bridge, TI XDS debug probe) to access PHY registers via DIEP GUI?
- What is the correct procedure to enable test pattern transmission on this EVM?
- Are there alternative methods to force continuous transmission without GUI software (specific MDIO register addresses I can write to manually)?
I would greatly appreciate guidance on the proper connection method and software configuration to enable PHY test modes for signal integrity testing.
Thank you for your assistance.
