TCAN1043A-Q1: Power Dissipation Calculation

Hi Team,

I am trying to estimate the power dissipation of the TCAN1043A-Q1 CAN transceiver.

From the datasheet, I considered the device power dissipation as:

PD=VCC×ICC

For my case:

VCC=5V
ICC=70mA

So the calculated power dissipation is:

PD=5×0.07=0.35W

My understanding is that this 350 mW corresponds to the IC power dissipation used for thermal calculations.

Could you please confirm if this approach is correct for TCAN1043A-Q1, or if additional contributions such as VSUP current and CAN bus driver losses should also be included?

Hi Michael,

Here is the Power dissipation calculated from the datasheet values, can you conform this from your end.

Formula:
P = [(1 − D) × ICCREC × VCC] + [D × ICCDOM × (VCC − VOD)] + [(1 − D) × VIO × IIOREC] + [D × VIO × IIODOM] + [VSUP × ISUP]
Values Used:

D = 0.5
ICCREC = 5 mA
ICCDOM = 60 mA
VCC = 5 V
VOD = 2.5 V
VIO = 3.3 V
IIOREC = 200 µA
IIODOM = 200 µA
VSUP = 14 V
ISUP = 130 µA

Calculation:
P = [(1 − 0.5) × 5mA × 5V] [0.5 × 60mA × (5 − 2.5)] [(1 − 0.5) × 3.3 × 200µA] [0.5 × 3.3 × 200µA] [14 × 130µA]
P = 12.5mW + 75mW + 0.33mW + 0.33mW + 1.82mW

Total Power Dissipation:
P ≈ 89.98mW ≈ 90mW
