ONET8501T: Seeking optical TIA solutions to support MGC and RSSI

Part Number: ONET8501T
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ONET8551T, OPA3S2859, LMH32401

Hello TI Experts:

Good day.

We are currently looking for an optical TIA for NB AOI applications. Specific hardware requirements are as follows:

Message Type: NRZ Pulse Signal

Bandwidth: > 180 MHz

Transistor Gain: 5k Ohm

Input Current: 10uA ~ 50uA (Source Mode Support Required)

Key Requirement 1: Must support MGC (Manual Gain Control) (The customer is considering system response speed and does not accept purely automatic control)

Key Requirement 2: Must have RSSI monitoring function

Output: Single-ended or Differential are both OK.

Current Problem: We evaluated the ONET8551T (or ONET85x1T series), but this series uses an AGC (Automatic Gain Control)/limiting architecture internally, which cannot initially support the MGC function we need.

Therefore, we would like to ask:

1.) Is it possible to implement MGC control through external circuitry with the ONET8551T?

2.) If the ONET series cannot handle MGC externally, are there any other recommended TIA products for the above requirements? Or what kind of discrete architecture (e.g., OPA + VGA) is suggested to simultaneously meet MGC and RSSI needs?

Thank you!

  • Hello Jony,

      Thanks for reaching out!

      1) That is correct. It is not possible to implement external Manual Gain Control (MGC) on the ONET8551T or any of the other ONET devices in our portfolio.

      2) Yes, we can recommend a different architecture. As you mentioned one option is a TIA followed by a VGA for the manual gain switching. Since your input current range isn't too wide, you can use either a Fixed TIA stage followed by a VGA or PGA (depending if you need analog or digital control on the gain), or you can use a switched gain TIA like the OPA3S2859 or LMH32401, which then you can follow up by VGA or PGA. The LMH32401 has the added integrated features of an input protection clamp up to 100mA and ambient light cancelation up to 3mA. Note the ambient light cancelation feature in the LMH32401 only works when photodiode is sinking a photocurrent. Also, your requirement is Transistor Gain: 5k Ohm, LMH32401 has two gain switches (2kOHm and 20kOhm), but OPA3S2859 is configurable and can use up to three gain options.

    Best Regards,
    Sima
