DS90UB954-Q1: How to implement Medical 2xMOPP isolation for FPD-Link III signals?

FPD-Link devices do not have internal medical-grade isolation. You would need an external isolation scheme to meet the 2x MOPP requirements.

Under the IEC 60601-1 standard, 2x MOPP requires 4000 VAC isolation, double insulation, and a minimum 8 mm creepage and clearance distance. Since FPD-Link carries both high-speed video (forward channel) and I2C/SPI control data (back channel), you must isolate both data and power.

It depends on the system architecture. If the camera/sensor is directly in contact with the patient, you can add a digital isolator between the patient side and the isolated interface, and then pass the data to our FPD-Link chipset. You can also look into a fiber/optical converter for FPD-Link for isolation.

Based on my understanding, any data lines that pass from the patient circuit to the main system must be separated by an isolation barrier, so only the FPD-Link RIN traces should need isolation. But TI does not officially support the conversion of our FPD-Link protocol into fiber optics.
