TIOS1013: Surge Issue with TIOS1013

Part Number: TIOS1013
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TSM36A, TIOS1023

Dear TI Team,

We are experiencing a problem with Surge Test and the TIOS1013 chip. When we apply 1 kV Surge to the output pin, we get a 15 ms reset at the output. This must be due to the chip’s own self-recovery function. In parallel with the chip, we have another external TVS diode on the pcb, the SMBJ-33CA. We have tested with the SMBJ-30CA and the SMBJ-36CA. We get the same effect with all of them. First question: do you have any advice on another TVS diode?

We had the idea of leaving the Ilim resistor open. With this option, everything works correctly. However, although the datasheet states that the maximum current is 300mA, the output current is not limited. It’s only via nFAULT that a current exceeding 300 mA is signalled, isn't?

In summary,

- Do you have any experience with another TVS that works actively and properly with the TIOS1013?

- Is there a pin-compatible chip with the TIOS1013 that is more resistant to immunity tests?

- Any other suggestions or ideas?

Many thanks in advance!

  • I agree that if you are seeing a 15ms delay in communication following a surge event, then as you suggest this is likely due to the current fault driver re-enable wait time.

Generally our concern is to protect the TIOS1013 from being damaged from the surge event and we would expect some communication disruption.  The TVS diode will only sink current while the voltage exceeds the clamping voltage and the TIOS1013's driver will have to sink the current when the voltage is not greater than the clamping voltage during the pulse.

I don't have a specific recommendation for a TVS diode that I know would completely prevent the possibility of communication disruptions, but you may consider TI's TSM36A.  I know the engineers for this device have done surge testing on that diode with our IO-Link transceivers so they would be better suited to answer your questions if you post it in the E2E forum with the TSM36A part number.

The TIOS1023 is pin-compatible with the TIOS1013 that you could consider because it has an active current limiting circuit to try to restrict the current to the limit when it exceeds the threshold before disabling the driver unlike the TIOS1013 that will simply disable the driver if the current exceeds the threshold for a period of time longer than the blanking time of approximately 200us.

    Regards,

    Jonathan
