TCA9511A: TCA9511A I2C hot-plugging

Part Number: TCA9511A

Hi Expert,

Could you help to check if TCA9511 on main board of which SCL/SDA In are connecting I2C Master, and SCL/SDA Out are connecting AC PSU hot-plugging in/out? Is it workable? And can TCA9511 SCL/SDA In be connecting In in series connection? There's only SCL/SDA Out connecting Out on 10.2.1.1 Series connections of TCA9511 datasheet.

  • Hi Wang,

Adding Jack to help with your question.

    Regards,

    Tyler

  • Hi Wang,

This device can be used in a hot-plug I2C application as the device keeps the buses disconnected during the insertion event. Once the buses are idle or a stop bit on IN side is detected, the TCA9511A connects the buses and READY goes high. The device can also be used in series, however the VOL after each TCA9511A used in series will be increased by an offset of ~60mV due (explained further in section 9.2.1 of the data sheet).

    Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

Do you mean that IN side shall connect to the mating connector?

After connector mated, IN side will detect the bus idle or not, but a stop bit is sent by master. So IN side shall connect the I2C Master too.

It looks the present design of TCA9511 IN side connecting Master and OUT side connecting the connector that's incompatible.

  • Hi Wang,

Please note that the pre-charge circuitry exists on both the -IN and -OUT side, the example in Section 9.3 shows SCLIN and SDAIN connecting to the main bus.

    Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

In series connection mode, is every TCA9511A's SCLIN and SDAIN required to connect the main bus?

Otherwise, is the first TCA9511A's IN requried connecting the main bus only?

And no requirements on the 2nd one's IN connection.

  • Hi Wang,

No the devices do not have to connect to the main bus. They can be connected to the upstream TCA9511A. For consistency, you may have SCLIN/ SDAIN facing the master/ upstream side and out facing the target downstream.

    Regards,

    Jack
