TUSB4041I-Q1: Product Selection

Part Number: TUSB4041I-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3USB221A, TUSB4041I

This is in relation to my inquiry on TS3USB221A: TS3USB221A USB MUX.

Hi TI team,

For our application, we’re currently considering using the TS3USB221A together with the TI TUSB4041I USB hub as part of a USB 2.0 distribution board.

With this in mind, could you advise on any key considerations when using the mux in front of (or alongside) the hub? In particular, we’re interested in:

  • Any concerns with placing the mux upstream vs downstream of the hub
  • Impact of the mux on USB enumeration or hub stability
  • Routing or layout practices specific to mux + hub integration
  • Recommended limits (if any) on trace length, connectors, or total channel budget when both devices are used together
  • Whether a re-driver is typically needed in this kind of architecture

We are targeting operation across a wider temperature range with multiple interconnects, so we want to make sure we’re accounting for any system-level risks early in the design. Any temp graded version of this as well?

Appreciate your guidance on this.

Best regards,
Edgardo

  • HI Edgardo:

Mux can be placed on both hub upstream and downstream port.

Mux normally has insertion loss 0.2-0.3db at 240Mh which will affect HS eye diagram test.

When you design system with USB2 hub and mux, the total loss from hub downstream port to USB connector is around 1db, so you need to calculate all the loss on your system which include trace loss, mux loss, cable loss (if have calbe) and PCB loss ( vias).

Normally the system with hub and  mux need additional USB redriver.

    Best
