Hi Avery,

The total power dissipation would need to be calculated based on the total output power of all channels and the efficiency of the device. You can use this formula: Ptot / Efficiency * 100 - Ptot. For example a total output power of 40W at 85% efficiency would have a total power dissipation of ~7.06W.

Hi isaac,

Because the power consumption may vary, I'd like to calculate the internal temperature of the TPA6132A2RTER to ensure it doesn't exceed 150°C (Tspc-Tj). Referring to the datasheet, TA Operating free-air temperature is 85°C, Rja is 51.1°C, and the calculated Pd is 1.272, Rjc is 53.9, and Tc is 81.44. Is this correct?

Also, why is Rja=51.1 < Rjc=53.9? According to the manual, Rja should usually be > Rjc!

Am I misunderstanding something?

This device has a thermal shutdown feature which is triggered at 150ºC to prevent thermal overload. For your thermal calculations, please refer to this application report: Semiconductor and IC Package Thermal Metrics
