TRS213: TRS213IDBRG4 Contact ESD Specification and External TVS Protection

Hi AE,

          The system requires 10 kV Contact ESD, but the datasheet only specifies HBM ±15 kV. 

           1. Is there a Contact ESD specification for the TRS213IDBRG4? 

           2. If a Semtech RCLAMP1521ZATFT (10 kV Contact ESD) TVS is added, will the TRS213IDBRG4 operate without any issues?

    Hi Bruce,

    Contact ESD is specified by IEC 61000-4-2. That device does not have contact ESD protection internally. We do not have a rating for it. 

    Note TRS213E can be used, but it only achieves 8kV of contact protection. Most RS-232 systems include an external ESD diode, like ESDS552, to achieve higher levels of protection. ESDS552 has 2 channels and supports up to 30kV of contact protection. 

    That diode you listed should be fine since it is bidirectional and clamps within the receiver max voltage.
