TCA9517: About TCA9517 "Series  configuration"

In the TCA9517 datasheet Figure 9, it shows that TCA9517 can support a " Series  configuration". My customer has the following questions about this:
  1. In Figure 9, only VCCB supply is shown, but VCCA supply is not visible. In this " Series  configuration" structure, do VCCA and VCCB have to be shorted together to share one VCC? Or can VCCA and VCCB be powered separately with difference power rail(for example, VCCA=1.8V, VCCB=3.3V)?
  2. In Figure 9, the I2C master is connected to the A-side, and the I2C slave is connected to the B-side. Is it allowed to reverse this connection? (That is: I2C master connected to the B-side, and I2C slave connected to the A-side.) Why?

    1. The VCCA/ VCCB voltage would need to be the same, so that the B-port of the upstream TCA9517 can satisfy the A-port of the TCA9517 logic thresholds. 

    2. Yes this connection is acceptable as long as VIL/ VOL of the TCA9517, MCU, and target device are all satisfied.
