DP83867IS: ESD contact discharge issue

During ESD testing, we come across “link lost” events at 8kV contact discharge on the Ethernet connector. 8kV is the needed level for GRID standards. Usually the problem recovers, but sometimes the link stays down.

We implemented and checked all design guidelines regarding EMC, and also tested various settings which are supposed to help with ESD robustness (such as disabling EEE) without success.

 

Therefore the following questions:

Are there any settings which allow for a slower link down detection, such as debouncing?

Are there other settings you recommend for more ESD robustness?

    The goal is to have DP83867 work at 8kV contact discharge with Class B performance correct? (Link may drop, but PHY should recover itself) Or is the goal to have the PHY work at 8kV Class A? (no link drop)

    How do you determine a link drop? Is this through the LED pin of the PHY or through the interrupt pin/register access?

    Are there any settings which allow for a slower link down detection, such as debouncing?

    There is a Fast link drop register setting that you want to make sure is disabled. Fast link drop will increase the sensitivity of the link as it will drop within 15us.

    Are there other settings you recommend for more ESD robustness?

    ESD robustness is largely tied to the layout of your PCB, and there are not dedicated PHY registers that improve ESD performance. If you're able to share the layout I can review this for improvements.
