TLIN1028-Q1: Texas Instruments has reviewed CPR No. CPR261150774 - TLIN10285DRBRQ1

Dear TI Team,

I would need your further kind support regarding SMD IC TLIN10285DRBRQ1:

 

  1. what is the expected behaviour of the IC if there is insufficient cooling , (naturally, when this is built on the PCBA)? In this case, the IC is completely turned off and the IC does not ensure/provide power prolonged period of time and completely disconnects other circuit parts and turns off all LEDs OR there is some power and some flickering at LEDs.
  2. Whar exact conditions would trigger a short circuit between VCC and GND?  - for example can a momentary, short overvoltage cause such this short?

And could you please share on which pin arising overvoltage can cause such this IC short?

    Unfortunately, we can only guarantee behavior within the abs max rating and cannot tell how the device may or may not behave outside the data sheet spec.

    Hence, yes, any condition outside the abs max rating and ESD ratings can infact cause damages similar to your observation. I hope this gives you some direction on which case may pertain to your system environment, for further evaluation. You may further see TLIN1028x-Q1 Functional Safety, FIT Rate, Failure Mode Distribution and Pin FMA clarifying potential damage when VCC is shorted to GND. Furthermore damages may also be expected if the overvoltage is above the data sheet's limit, thanks.

  • Hi Michael,

    Good news, because Videoton managed to reproduce this phenomenon/issue of the IC. We connected 13.5 VDC between pin 8 (VCC) of the IC and pin 3 (GND) of the IC.
    The result: the IC is burned on its package and a short circuit can be measured between Vcc and GND.

    Please see the result in the picture of the reproduction:

    And you can find the oscilloscope photo as well

    Please be so kind and confirm the reproduction can be valid or not according to the TI's perspective! Comparing the two situations, Could this result be happened in the above event as well with the given conditions?

    Videoton reproduced this event i.e connecting to the VCC pin and we would like to ask TI's confirmation for our customer so that the manufacturer itself confirm this.

    Thanks for clarifying and  yes, 13.5 V is above the data sheet's 6 V limit and the observed behavior can be expected, thanks.
