LMH0340: Support Request: HD-SDI Interface Using i.MX8M Plus LVDS Outpu

Dear Support Team,

We are designing a system based on the NXP i.MX8M Plus processor and would like your guidance regarding the implementation of an HD-SDI interface.

Our requirement is to support three HD-SDI outputs. We are planning to use the LVDS interface of the i.MX8M Plus and convert it to HD-SDI using the following devices:

  • LMH0340SQE/NOPB – LVDS to HD-SDI Serializer
  • 2 × LMH0324RTWT – 1-to-3 HD-SDI Distribution Amplifiers

Could you please confirm whether the LVDS interface of the i.MX8M Plus is compatible with this architecture for generating three HD-SDI outputs?

If this approach is not recommended or supported, could you please suggest an alternative solution for implementing three HD-SDI interfaces while continuing to use the i.MX8M Plus processor? We would prefer to retain the i.MX8M Plus in our design, as it satisfies all of our other system requirements.

We would appreciate your recommendations and any reference designs or application notes that may help us implement this interface successfully.

    The LMH0340/0040/0070/0050 SDI Serializers are part of TI’s family of FPGA-Attach SER/DES products supporting 5-bit LVDS interfaces with FPGAs as shown below.

    So you need to make sure the i.MX8M output can support this type of format and resolution. You will also need to make sure the I.MX8M can provide SMPTE 424 or other SMPTE protocol.

  • Hi Sir,

    I reviewed the i.MX8M Plus Reference Manual and could not find any information indicating support for the SMPTE 424 standard or other SMPTE protocols for the display interface.

    While researching possible implementation options, I came across the attached architecture for an HD-SDI display interface.

    Could you please review the attached architecture and let me know if it would be suitable for our HD-SDI display interface requirement? Alternatively, would it be necessary to use a dedicated FPGA along with the i.MX8M Plus to implement the HD-SDI interface and support the required video processing/protocol conversion?

    I would appreciate your guidance on the recommended architecture so that we can proceed with the design accordingly.

    You can use FPGA such as noted below on top of your i.MX6 processor. Here is the link to different FPGA and example IP for this application: www.ti.com/.../broadcast_video_serdes_ip.

    Thank you for your response.

    Unfortunately, using an FPGA is not a feasible option for our design due to certification requirements, additional cost, and physical space constraints.

    Could you please recommend any discrete IC that is compatible with the i.MX8M Plus LVDS controller for HD-SDI conversion?

    We have identified the following serializer ICs, which specify ANSI/TIA/EIA-644-A compliant LVDS inputs, indicating that they appear to be electrically compatible with the i.MX8M Plus LVDS interface.

    However, we have some concerns regarding the LVDS video format compatibility. While the electrical interface appears to match, we are not certain whether the LVDS video output format (such as data mapping, bit ordering, timing, and lane configuration) from the i.MX8M Plus is compatible with these serializer ICs.

    Could you please review the list of ICs below and let us know whether any of them are compatible with the i.MX8M Plus LVDS output? If not, we would appreciate your recommendation for a suitable discrete IC that can directly interface with the i.MX8M Plus LVDS controller.

    I can only speak for TI SDI Serializer as I am not familiar with Semtech solution. 

    For TI SDI serializer, LMH0040/0050/0340/0341 devices are all FPGA assisted SDI serializer/deserializers. FPGA must be used to enable SDI video framing and compatibility.
