Hi,

We are currently using the DS90CR287 as the CameraLink transmitter in many of our designs. However, we are looking for an alternative due to its limited operating temperature range.

We are evaluating the SN65LVDS93A as a possible replacement for the following reasons:

  • The serialization/bit mapping appears to match the DS90CR287.
  • The clocking architecture and 28-bit to 4-channel LVDS serialization are identical.
  • The LVDS electrical characteristics appear compatible.
  • The SN65LVDS93A supports an industrial operating temperature range of –40°C to +85°C, whereas the DS90CR287 is specified for –10°C to +70°C.

Our application interfaces with a standard CameraLink frame grabber, and we would appreciate your guidance on the following:

  1. Can the SN65LVDS93A be used as a functional replacement for the DS90CR287 in a CameraLink transmitter application?
  2. Are there any protocol, timing, PLL, or interoperability differences that would prevent it from working with a standard CameraLink frame grabber?
  3. Has TI validated or received customer feedback regarding the use of the SN65LVDS93A in CameraLink applications?
  4. Is there any recommended TI device that provides:
    • CameraLink-compatible 28-bit LVDS serialization,
    • –40°C to +85°C (or wider) operating temperature range, and
    • a smaller footprint, preferably in a BGA package?

From the SN65LVDS93A datasheet, we noticed that a 4.5 mm × 7 mm BGA package is available. If this package is recommended for new designs, could you please share the corresponding orderable part number?

  • Hi Anil,

    1. The device simply serializes LVTTL with RGB and HS/VS/DE data input to LVDS output. So this can be used for the conversion.

    However, whether it can work with your system and "CameraLink" will depend on factors such as cable length and signal integrity. What do you mean by CameraLink? Is there a cable used? How long is it going to be and is it rated for LVDS or OLDI signal transmission for all the differential pairs?

    2. The LVDS93A device converts RGB/TTL to LVDS. Please check whether the input of the CameraLink, or frame grabber is compatible with LVDS or OLDI. 

    3. This part is validated for the specifications shared in the datasheet for LVDS output. If the CameraLink, frame grabber, display, SoC, etc you are using are compliant for openLDI or LVDS video interface, then it should be compatible.

    4. On your application are you using cable and connector, or is the transmission on the same board?

    I will check whether a BGA part is available for the SN65LVDS93A and get back to you.

    Thanks for the reponse. 

    Camera Link is a communication interface based on LVDS signaling. A Camera Link cable will be used to connect our camera to the frame grabber. The frame grabber supports the Camera Link (LVDS) interface.

    Based on your reponse it seems we can use this Device. Please suggest if we have BGA pacakge available ?

    2. Does this CameraLink part already work with the DS90CR287 output? Was it tested previously?
