DP83822HF: RX Error on DP83822HF Pin RX_ER

Part Number: DP83822HF

Hello,

We developed own EtherCAT slave products using the DP83822HFRHBR PHY device but unfortunately, we are facing incrementing error counters on the PHY device itself (register 0x0015 Receive Error Count Register (RECR)) and every now and then even on the EtherCAT Slave Controller. The schematic looks as follows:

We use the following test setup:

Beckhoff master <-> ECAT slave 1 <-> ECAT slave 2

The two ECAT-slaves are identical products.

We observe on ECAT slave 1, that the RX_ER pin 28 on the PHY of Port 1 gets high after a couple of seconds and in parallel the Receive Error Count Register (RECR) increments on the respective PHY while running ECAT communication. We believe that this indicates that something is wrong with our hardware, since we have already exchanged the cable and can rule out the cable as the root cause.

We believe that the RX_ER register should remain at low level all the time.

Just FYI, we have read/write access to all the PHY registers while running the test in case that the register values may help identify the cause of the issue.

Can you help us to understand better why the RX_ER signal detects errors and can you confirm that the PHY circuit on our schematic is OK?

Thank you for your support in advance.

  • Hi Andre,

An incrementing RX_Error counter indicates the PHY is seeing errors coming from the link partner. This could be dependent on the link partner, the cable, or the MDI routing of your board (traces between the PHY and RJ-45 connector). If the cable and link partner are not the issue, the problem could be on the MDI path of your design.

The schematic seems ok, and if the RX_Error counter only occasionally increments there could be a subtle issue. Are you certain the magnetic specifications are meeting the specs in the DP83822 datasheet? Does the XI clock meet the specs defined in the datasheet as well? If so, then the next place to look would be the layout of the MDI traces.

Are you able to share the layout file for review? This is best as an altium or cadence file and can be shared over private message if preferred.

    Best,

    Shane
