TSS721A: Charging a supercapacitor from TSS721A STC output

Part Number: TSS721A

Hello,

I am designing an M-Bus slave powered by a Texas Instruments TSS721A. I would like to charge a single Eaton 0.47 F, 5 V supercapacitor from the TSS721A STC output.

The available STC current is approximately 1–2.6 mA, with a normal voltage of 5.6–7.5 V and a possible no-load clamp up to approximately 11.5 V. The supercapacitor should be charged to approximately 4.2–4.5 V and must not discharge back into STC when the M-Bus is disconnected.

Could you recommend an TI IC, topology, or reference design that provides:

  • Input current limited to approximately 1–2 mA.

  • Startup with the supercapacitor at 0 V.

  • Very low quiescent current.

  • Reverse-current blocking.

  • Compatibility with the TSS721A STC voltage and current limits.

I am particularly concerned about startup current, repeated hiccup, and backfeeding from the supercapacitor into STC.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Jose.

  • Hi Jose,

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any reference designs we have that fit all of your criteria. We haven't done any testing using a C_STC as large as you are proposing, my best suggestion would be to acquire some samples of the TSS721A and test these on the system yourself.
