TUSB213: Extending USB 2.0 Communication Line to 20 m

Part Number: TUSB213
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB216

Hi

I’m planning to extend a USB 2.0 data line to 20 m (see attached diagram). In the proposed design, multiple ICs are connected in series. Will this arrangement cause problems for USB 2.0 signaling over 20 m?

Please let me know any recommended measures (active extenders, hubs, cable type, termination, power) to maintain reliable communication.

Regards,

  • Hello,

If you are looking to create a 20 meter USB2 system, I would recommend the TUSB216 over the TUSB213. The TUSB216 is our latest design, and has been used before for 10meter systems.

20 meters is a rather extreme length for a USB2 system though. What exactly is this application for? We typically recommend against any system length greater than 10 meters, but if you wish to try this, I would recommend at least testing this setup with EVMs if possible.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

  • Thank you for your reply.

I understand that extending to 20 m is not recommended.
I can’t explain the application in detail.
    sorry.

However, I can explain the background.
There is an existing product that includes a control panel and a USB port (for storage).
This product can be mounted on a large piece of user equipment,
but because the unit itself is large, there is not enough space available for installation.

If we can separate the control-panel and USB-port section, the product's dimensions will be reduced, making installation possible.
*The main unit will be installed in an inconspicuous location on the equipment.

I will try to verify operation with the TUSB216.
    Thank you.
