Feability of 1000M Ethernet PHY to replace of serdes in base station application

You know, the Serdes was used in the connection between BBU and RRU and RRU can recover the reference clcok from high data rate. Some digital repeater customers are trying to replace of Serdes with 1000M Ethernet PHY-GRMII. The PHY was connected to FPGA by MAC interface. whether is it ok? if yes, how to work?

Could you provide some more detail on the proposed implementation? Is the intent to replace the Serdes with an end-to-end 1000M Ethernet link (MAC to Phy to cable to Phy to MAC)?

the customer only told me they saw the solution with Ethernet to replace Serdes for cost down in the field.

Yes, it is the intent to replace the serdes with an end to end 1000M link.
